Community Resource Center for Refugees: Brochure

The Community Resource Center for Refugees (CRCR) at 2826 S. Calhoun Street connects foreign-born, new arrivals with existing community organizations, resources, and individuals. This is achieved by offering educational programs and services designed to help new arrivals become self-sufficient and successfully integrate into the community. Assistance is also provided to area organizations to enable them to successfully connect with the new arrivals by offering cultural competency services office and meeting space, and introductions to newly-arriving ethnic groups. A variety of skills and education classes are offered at the Center, which include, but are not limited to, ESL (English as a Second Language), employment skills, healthy homes, healthcare navigation, disease prevention, volunteer training, etc. The Center serves between twenty and fifty people daily, by walk-in or by phone (260-456-8969).

Most of the programming is intended for those refugees who do not qualify for assistance through one of the local primary resettlement agencies and who have resided in the U.S. for less than five years. Some of the Center’s programming is also available to anyone in the greater Fort Wayne community.

Many organizations partner to offer services at the Resource Center as listed below. Call 456-8969 to contact them directly. Regular service hours are Monday -Friday 9AM-5PM, and other hours specified by appointment.

St. Joseph Community Health Foundation

Description:Focuses on increasing healthcare access for the poor and vulnerable through private grants; by serving as fiscal agent for governmental grants, and by special initiatives including operating this Resource Center. The Community Initiatives staff is available to help with collaborations at the Center, connections with other community resources, and in operating governmental grants and projects in the areas of refugee integration and health and wellness accessibility.

Allen County Lead & Healthy Homes Program:

Description:Culturally appropriate lead and home hazard education and interpretive services are provided for families of lead-poisoned children and the community at large. These services include community outreach education available in both English and Burmese. Co-sponsored by the Fort Wayne-Allen County Dept. of Health and the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation, free lead screenings are given the 3rd and 4th Monday of each month at the Center, 5:30p.m.-7p.m., and every Friday at the Allen County Department of Health Immunization Clinic from 1p.m.-4p.m. Clientele:Allen County residents Hours:Monday-Friday 9a.m.-5p.m. Phone:(260)456-8969 (ext. 318 for Outreach Educator; ext. 325 for Program Coordinator).

Burmese Advocacy Center:

Description:Staff provides individual counseling and classes for refugees on employment, independent life skills, health, disease prevention, and management. Volunteers provide help with public assistance and interpretation/translation for refugees. Services aim to allow Burmese to successfully integrate into the Fort Wayne community. Clientele:Refugees only, including every ethnic and religious group of Burmese refugees Hours:Mondays 12noon – 7pm; Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays 9am-5pm.
BAC volunteers help with Medicaid, food stamps, cash assistance, housing, IDs, letter reading, and medical appointment every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00-4:00pm.

The Reclamation Project:

Description:TRP operates the "Circle of Friends" program, pairing American families with refugee families to assist with life assimilation, acculturation issues, while ultimately forming friendships. TRP coordinates "Train the Trainer" classes that train American volunteers in zero-level literacy instruction. These volunteers then teach refugees in the community this most basic English level. FSSA: Family and Social Services Administration:

Description:Enrollment assistance for Burmese refugees to FSSA Medicaid, Food Stamps and other assistance programs. Advantage Health Solutions:

Description:ADVANTAGE Health Solutions, Inc, under contract with Indiana Medicaid, has developed the Indiana Medicaid Burmese Refugee Assistance Program located in the Center. This Burmese Refugee Assistance Program has bilingual Advocacy Coordinators to assist in establishing a primary physician relationship, understanding Medicaid benefits, arranging transportation to improve access to medical services, and language-appropriate translation/interpreter service Clientele:The clientele served by the Indiana Medicaid Burmese Refugee Assistance Program are Burmese Refugees of all ages that are eligible for Medicaid health insurance. This includes- Hoosier Healthwise- a health insurance plan for children and women who are pregnant that qualify for Medicaid. Healthy Indiana Plan- a health insurance plan for low income families that do not qualify for Medicaid because their income is too high but do not have any other health insurance coverage. Care Select – a health insurance plan for aged, blind, and disabled adults that qualify for Medicaid. Traditional Medicaid - a health insurance plan for Medicaid members that do not qualify for the other care programs. ADVANTAGE works closely with other local agencies in its day to day work with the Advocacy Program and its clients. As a community member of the CRCR, ADVANTAGE sees a strong role in helping communicate the many resources available to meet the cultural needs of the Burmese refugees and "connecting the dots" for these people.

Burmese Muslim Community:

Description:The Burmese Muslim Community (BMC) helps Burmese refugees apply for utility and rent assistance from the Adams Township Trustee. They also work with community partners to provide ESL classes, training classes for sewing skills, religious classes during summers, transportation/interpretation to/for medical appointments, and computer classes to teach basic technological skills. Super Shot:

Description:Super Shot,Inc.is committed to helping prevent childhood diseases by providing free immunizations for Hepatitis B, Meningococcal Meningitis, Influenza, Tetanus-Diptheria-Pertussis (Tdap), and Varicella (chickenpox) for children in Allen County at 30 clinics a month. Clientele:Allen County residents up to age 18. Hours:30 Clinics a month include the Center on 3rd & 4th Mondays from 4 -7 pm. Burmese Translators provided at Refugee Center. Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic (NCLC):

Description:NCLC offers free legal representation (in Landlord/Tenant, Housing/Foreclosure, Guardianship, Custody/Visitation, Child Support, Immigration, Bankruptcy, Consumer/Debt, Wills/Estates, SSI/SSD, Discrimination, Tax Controversies and others) and preventive law education to low-income and immigrant families/individuals. They do not accept criminal or divorce cases. Clientele:NCLC accepts clients throughout Central and Northeastern Indiana whose income is at or below 125% of the federal poverty guidelines. Hours:2nd, 3rd, & 4th Monday of each month from 5:00pm-7:00pm 4th Saturday of each month from 10:00am-Noon Contact info: Walk-ins for limited sessions (5-7); first-come first-served during normal intake hours.

Crime Victim Care (CVC)

Description:Crime Victim Care (CVC) is a faith-based 501 (c ) 3 organization aiming to care, advocate, and support victims of crime. Services include criminal justice advocacy, court accompaniment, translation, transportation, individual and group counseling, family counseling, help in applying for restitution, parenting classes, and emergency social and economic support. Clothing & Household Goods Bank (operated by the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation):

Description:The Clothing and Household Goods Bank is a source of clothing, furniture, other necessary household items (including functioning kitchen appliances), and emergency food for newly arriving refugees in need of basic necessities. Donations of clothing and essential household items (towels, sheets, pots, pans, dishes and furniture) are welcome and will be used to help furnish homes for new refugees Clientele:Low Income Allen County residents ; especially refugees. Community Garden (operated by the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation and Burmese Advocacy Center):

Description:The Community Garden project aims to help refugees achieve self-sufficiency byteaching and allowing them to grow fresh produce in American soil, and by teaching them to preserve their produce for future use and to sell the fresh produce.
